Plus-Two vocational courses reorganised

Special Correspondent

They have been divided into nine groups

VELLORE: The School Education Department has reorganised the existing 67 courses in the Plus-Two vocational stream and classified them into nine broad groups, in pursuance to its government orders dated January 6, 2009 accepting the recommendations of the high level committee headed by Girija Vaidhyanathan, Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu Planning Commission.

The committee was constituted by the government in June 2007 to go into the existing vocational subjects and suggest reforms in the vocational syllabus, following representations made by the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers Association.

The association had been demanding a revamp of the vocational syllabus — which had not been updated since the inception of the vocational stream and the `10+2+3’ educational pattern in 1978 — in tune with the modern technological developments around the world and the changing needs of the industrial sector. In the process of revamping the syllabus, the government has retained only 30 groups (now converted into subjects falling into nine broad groups) and jettisoned 37 groups which were outdated, and for which there were few takers.

As per a follow-up government order dated October 26, 2009 issued by the School Education Department, the Director of School Education has informed that the erstwhile 30 vocational groups have been re-classified into the following nine broad groups, and the syllabi framed accordingly:

General Machinist (clubbing the existing groups of air-conditioning & refrigeration), Electrical Machines & Appliances (electrical domestic appliances and electrical motor rewinding), Electronics Equipments (radio & TV with maths, radio & TV with physics, domestic electronics, and projection equipment), Draughtsman Civil (building maintenance), Textile & Dress Designing (dress designing & making (with chemistry) and textiles & designs), Agricultural Practices (crop production, dairying, farm mechanics and post-harvesting technology, poultry, plant protection, sericulture and apiculture, small farm management, spices and plantation crops, vegetables & fruits, agricultural chemicals and fisheries), Food Management and Child Care (dietetics & nutrition and food preparation, food preservation (with biology), baking and confectionary and child care), Nursing (nursing with physics and nursing with chemistry), and Office Secretaryship (office secretaryship with shorthand and office secretaryship with accountancy).

The government order further stated that the new syllabi as per the reorganised groups would come into effect for the 11th standard vocational stream from the academic year 2010-11, and for the 12th standard vocational stream from 2011-12. While the `Agricultural Practices’ group would be offered in the Tamil medium, all the other eight groups would offered both in the Tamil and English mediums.

In a statement, S.N. Janardhanan, State organising secretary of the Tamil Nadu Higher Secondary School Postgraduate Commerce Vocational Teachers Kazhagam said that the association expressed its gratitude to the Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Minister for School Education Thangam Thennarasu, the Secretary, Department of School Education, the Director of School Education and the Joint Director of Vocational Education for having reorganised the vocational syllabi, in deference to the long-pending demand of the vocational teachers and students.
