Samathuvapuram opened at Thagattur

VEDARANYAM: A 100-dweller unit Periyar Memorial Samathuvapuram was inaugurated at Thagattur by Deputy Chief Minister, M. K. Stalin, on Saturday.
Spread over eight acres, it has been constructed at a cost of Rs.2.47 crore.
This is Nagapattinam’s fifth and the State’s 14 th samathuvapuram to be opened in the current year.
This year’s target of unveiling 29 samathuvapurams will be met by December, said Mr. Stalin. Thirty samathuvapurams would be constructed in 2009-10 and 36 more in 2010-11.
“The self-help group system represents a movement,” said Mr. Stalin at a function to disburse revolving funds for SHGs in the district. Pointing to statistics, he said the women remained high on the scale of credit-worthiness owing to their excellent loan repayment record.
Averring there was no politics attached to the SHG movement, Mr. Stalin reiterated that the objective was to empower women and instil in them a sense of self-respect.
He disbursed revolving funds to the tune of Rs.11.21crore to 1,758 SHGs. Over 20,254 women are expected to benefit.
