CHENNAI: “At the age of 15, when many do not even step out of their houses, Sachin Tendulkar represented the country. There is inspiration all around us,” said Kapil Dev, cricketer and former team Indian captain. “All you have to do is to dream big and try to fulfil it.” He was speaking at an interactive session with young achievers from various Corporation schools in the city organised by Everonn Education on Saturday. The event was organised as part of Children’s day celebrations.

Recounting some of his childhood experiences, Kapil Dev said that his success at a young age was built upon contributions from a number of people – friends, family and coaches. “I was a naughty kid. Teachers did not like me much. Only on sports day, the teachers loved me. Though teenagers are generally very interested in sports, they must realise that education is the most important thing in their lives. They must find the right balance,” he said.

According to him, youngsters today have a lot of opportunities and the attitude towards sports is also changing fast. “There is a realisation that not everyone can become a doctor, engineer or a scientist. Parents have understood that a youngster can become a sportsperson and still make a good living.”

The interactive session was webcast live at a number of schools and questions about cricket to life skills poured in from students. Five students who had excelled in either sports or academics, selected from the 25 Corporation schools in the city, were also felicitated by Kapil Dev.
