Ensuring hygiene: Collector V.K. Shanmugam handing over a Chloroscope, an equipment to test chlorine level in drinking water, to M. Baskaran (centre), Chief Education Officer, in Krishnagiri on Saturday. — KRISHNAGIRI: Star rating for the schools and village panchayats is in the offing in the district. They will be ranked on the basis of their performance in keeping their neighbourhood clean. In this connection, a one-day training programme for the trainers in Block Resource Centres and Block Resource Teachers was inaugurated by Collector V.K. Shanmugam here on Saturday. The Collector also inaugurated the supply of ‘Chloroscope’ equipment to gauge the chlorine content in the drinking water to 1,586 government schools. The equipment was supplied by UNICEF at a cost of Rs. 6.50 lakh. Mr. Shanmugam urged the teachers to keep clean sanitation facilities at their schools. He also appealed to the employees of the education department to create awareness on cleanliness among the students and strive to get star rating for their schools from the district administration. The star would be allotted to the schools and panchayats on the basis of the report submitted by the block hygiene and school sanitation teams. At the end of the year, the school and the panchayat which get 10 star rating would be honoured with a certificate from the Collector and a gold medal from UNCEF. Training and awareness programmes on how to operate Chloroscope would be given to all the school teachers in a phased manner. The teachers should ensure that the chlorine level in the drinking water was maintained between .2 to .5 mg per litre. The programme was organised by the UNICEF and the District Education Department at a marriage hall in the town. Krishnamoorthy and Kanakasundaram from India Environmental Sanitation Resource Centre were the resource persons for the programme. M. Baskaran, Chief Education Officer, Semalai, Chief Education Officer (SSA), and others participated. Velusamy, Consultant, UNICEF, organised the training programme jointly with the school education department.
