Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram East MLA V. Sivankutty has urged the State government to take stern action against the officials responsible for the year-long delay in implementing the flood-control project for the Thampanoor and East Fort areas in the city. Mr. Sivankutty alleged that a section of officials had conspired to sabotage the project prepared by a high-level committee headed by the then Minister for Public Works Mons Joseph. “The committee had amended the draft proposal after collecting feedback from the public and consulting experts from outside the state. The final report was submitted to the government a year ago. But there has been no effort to implement the proposal.” Plea to VS
Mr. Sivankutty said the failure to clean up the storm-water drains in the city was primarily responsible for heavy flooding in the city on Saturday. “Just before the southwest monsoon, 42 km of drains under the Public Works Department, National Highway and the City Corporation were desilted and cleaned up. But since then, the cleaning work has not been pursued.” Mr. Sivankutty appealed to the Chief Minister to intervene and initiate action against the officials responsible for the lapse in implementing the flood-control project.
