Kozhikode: The A.V. Abdu Rahman Haji Memorial Award was presented to Dr. K. Suresh Kumar, director, Institute of Palliative Medicine, Kozhikode Medical College, by Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran here on Monday.
The award comprising Rs.25,000 and a citation was given to Dr. Suresh Kumar for his contributions in the area of medical education and exemplary services in the area of palliative care, which had already attracted the attention of the medical fraternity from across the globe.
Talking after presenting the award, Mr. Ramachandran said that even keeping alive the memories of “great souls” like A.V. Abdu Rahman Haji was a good deed in itself. “Especially when the realm of practical politics feels the dearth of such inspiring individuals and public workers, who cared for the people they represented more than anything else,” he said.
Mr. Ramachandran said that Dr. Suresh Kumar had set a great example combining education and social service in a unique way, for the current and the coming generations to emulate. Dr. Suresh Kumar termed the award a “valuable motivation in the early stages of a great movement that has to go a long way ahead serving society.”
Reminding that there was a great deal of energy among the youth on the campuses which could be promptly utilised to build a better and healthier society, Dr. Suresh Kumar said there were always newer and practical things for him and his teams to learn from society he live with.
M.P. Veerendrakumar, leader of a Janata Dal (Secular) faction, delivered the AV Memorial speech. Muslim League Kozhikode district secretary P.K.K. Bava presided over the function.
