KOCHI: The third Navy Day all-Kerala football tournament, which kicks off at the Fort Kochi Parade Ground on November 21, has attracted some top clubs, including Viva Kerala, southern India’s lone entry in the I-League. The eight-team knockout tournament, organised by the INS Dronacharya as part of the Navy Week celebrations, offers Rs. 1 lakh to the winner this time. Kozhikode’s Malabar United, Universal Soccer, Chandni FC, Kochi’s Central Excise, Golden Threads, Thiruvananthapuram’s KSEB and Thrissur’s Gymkhana Club are the other teams which will be seen in action. “Next year, if some of the country’s top clubs came come here during this time, we’ll have a bigger tournament,” said Captain Sanjiv Issar, the Commanding Officer of INS Dronacharya, the tournament host. The matches will be played under lights, beginning 6.30 p.m., and as an added attraction, the host has planned a series of shows, which will see football jugglers, fire dancers, acrobatic dancers, kalaripayuttu experts and stunt bikers in action before and after the matches. The final will be played on November 29 and Vice-Admiral K.N. Sushil, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Naval Command, will be the chief guest at the closing function. — Principal Correspondent
