Ramanathapuram fishermen stay away from sea

C. Jaishankar

RAMANATHAPURAM: Mechanised boat fishermen in the district were denied mandatory token for venturing into the sea on Monday owing to the inclement weather in the Gulf of Mannar.

The fishermen were informed about the decision taken by the district administration in consultation with the Fisheries Department officials. As many as 600 boats were anchored in the jetty at Rameswaram.

Similarly, more than 100 boats based at Mandapam were asked not to venture into the sea.

There were reports that fishermen of Thondi, Periapattinam, Kilakarai and other landing centres in the district kept off from the sea in accordance with the directive. Collector T.N. Hariharan told The Hindu that it was only a precautionary measure.

They were asked to cancel a day’s trip since the administration did not want to take any risk.

Assistant Director of Fisheries (Rameswaram) T. Ilamvazhuthi said that though the situation had improved a bit from Monday afternoon, the weather condition was being closely monitored.

The decision to issue token would be taken based on the update of the Distress Cell.

Normal life was hit on Monday due to heavy rain in several parts of the district.

An average of 42.91 mm was registered in the district during the 24 hours that ended at 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Rameswaram, Mandapam, Pamban, Ramanathapuram, Mudukulathur and Paramakudi registered more than 50 mm.
