CBI files status report in Aarushi case
J. Venkatesan
New Delhi: The CBI on Monday filed a status report, in a sealed cover, before the Supreme Court in the Aarushi Talwar murder case.
The teenager’s domestic help Hemraj was also found murdered in her house in May 2007 in Noida.
A Bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph will take up for further hearing on December 12 a petition filed by advocate Surat Singh seeking media regulations in reporting such events. In a separate application, the CBI said it agreed with the petitioner that certain restraints should be put on the media to prevent damage to the reputation of individuals in pending criminal matters. At the same time, it said, investigating agencies should share vital information with the press in the public interest.
The CBI said: “This court may further make it clear that any police officer involved in character assassination of an accused or his family, friends, or of the victim shall be liable for damages done to the reputation of the person concerned.” It said the CBI had a well laid-down policy for interaction with the media.
