AMU to re-open on December 1

Staff Reporter

Those involved in the agitation won’t be victimised, says V-C

NEW DELHI: Aligarh Muslim University, which was closed indefinitely on October 30 following student unrest, is now all set to re-open on December 1.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, AMU Vice-Chancellor Prof. P.K. Abdul Azis said the students who were suspended for involvement in the agitation would not be victimised.

“The standing disciplinary committee of the University will examine the cases of the suspended students and reinstate them on a fast-track basis,” Prof. Azis added.

He said the issue of certain students who had violated the University code of conduct on previous occasions would be dealt with separately by the committee. The students concerned would also have to sign an undertaking that they would not agitate in future, he said, adding, “We will keep interacting with the students and the faculty to evolve a partnership with them.”

Classes were suspended at AMU on October 30 following students’ agitation over the death of a fellow-student on October 25.

To minimise the loss of working days, AMU has declared winter vacation from November 16 to 30.

As for the demand by a section of students that the Dean of Students’ Welfare and the Proctor resign, the V-C said: “They are performing well and will remain until their term is over or unless I find them incompetent.”

Protesting students had also demanded that the canteen remain open 24 hours, alleging that the student was murdered when he had gone out of the campus for dinner at night as the canteen was shut. However, Prof. Azis said that a 24-hour canteen was not required and it would remain open till 12 midnight.

About reinstatement of the Students’ Union that was dissolved two years ago, he said: “A high-level committee will be appointed to examine the modalities of operationalising the Lyngdoh Committee report. It will submit its report within three months.”

He said certain students were bringing undesirable and criminal elements into the hostel. “The campus must be rid of these elements.”
