Supreme Court rejects journalists’ petitions
J. Venkatesan
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected, at the admission stage, special leave petitions filed by two journalists challenging an order of the Madras High Court refusing to direct the Chennai Police Commissioner to register cases against certain film actors and other members of the Then India Nadigar Sangam (TINS) for alleged defamatory speeches against journalists at a meeting held on the Sangam premises.
A Bench of Justices H.S. Bedi and J.M. Panchal dismissed the SLPs filed by K. Asudhulla, secretary, Indian Federation of Working Journalists, and V. Anbazhagan, president, Chennai Union of Journalists, after hearing senior counsel V. Kanagaraj.
The Bench saw no reason to interfere with the High Court order dismissing the petitions.
After the arrest of News Editor of a Tamil newspaper, mediapersons had lodged a complaint with the Commissioner of Police against certain actors, seeking registration of a case.
Since no action was taken, a petition was filed in the High Court, which closed the case, accepting the statement of the government advocate that it was a mistake of fact.
