New Delhi: The Centre will soon come out with a blueprint to streamline deemed universities on the basis of the Professor Tandon Committee recommendations. Giving this information to the Supreme Court on Monday, Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam said the Tandon Committee had indicated the present position of the 130 deemed universities in the country. “Since we have to take into consideration the interests of students (if some institutions were to lose deemed university status), we have requested the committee to address certain issues of protection of students and it may take some time to file our reply,” he told a Bench of Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Mukundakam Sharma. Coordination with UGCThe Centre was also coordinating with the University Grants Commission on this issue and sought eight weeks to come out with a blueprint. Justice Bhandari wanted the Solicitor-General to go into the issue whether the concept of deemed university was prevalent in foreign countries and asked “why can’t we have only one category of universities here?” Mr. Subramaniam said the committee would look into every aspect including whether there was need for grant of deemed university status to an institution, and the government would file its action report. Further hearing is posted to the first week of January 2010. Advocate Viplav Sharma had filed a public interest litigation petition in 2006 seeking regulation of the deemed universities.
