Plan to upgrade facilities at ITIs

R. Vimal Kumar

Tirupur: To produce better workforce, the Department of Employment and Training plans to upgrade facilities at the two government-run Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) in the district at Dharapuram and Tirupur at an outlay of Rs. 4 crore.

C. Ravichandran, Regional Joint Director (training), Directorate of Employment and Training, told The Hindu that while Dharapuram ITI would be developed into a ‘centre of excellence’ for production and manufacturing trades using World Bank assistance, the infrastructure at Tirupur ITI be augmented under public-private partnership (PPP) mode.

Centre of excellence

To turn Dharapuram ITI into a centre of excellence, it had been planned to construct a new block with five classrooms and three sophisticated laboratories at Rs. 70 lakh.

New equipment

Gadgets like Computerised Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines, advanced welding instruments and some of the latest machinery used in the manufacturing sector costing about Rs. 2.6 crore would be procured for the laboratories in a phased manner for practical training sessions.

Employability

“This will help us give advanced training and thereby ensure better employability of students graduating out of these institutions,” Mr. Ravichandran said.

Besides, the existing edifice would be renovated at about Rs. 20 lakh.

As part of facilities enhancement planned at Tirupur ITI under PPP mode, an additional two-storied building with six classrooms and a computer laboratory would be set up.

“The works will be carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the project is expected to be commissioned next fiscal,” Mr. Ravichandran said.
