Special Correspondent

Stepping forward: Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment D. Napoleon (second from right) addressing the district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting in Perambalur on Tuesday.

PERAMBALUR: All the development works are being carried out in full swing in Perambalur district and preliminary works have been started for establishing the special economic zone (SEZ) in the district, said D. Napoleon, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, here on Tuesday.

The Minister, who was the chairman of the vigilance and monitoring committee for the three districts of Perambalur, Tiruchi and Karur, after holding the Perambalur district vigilance and monitoring committee meeting, said that efforts were taken to build a huge godown for storing the onions produced in the district. This would help the farmers.

Mr. Napoleon said that steps were being taken to lay the foundation stone for establishing the Government Medical College in February next year. He said that nearly 80 per cent of the road works taken up under the Prime Minister’s Sadak Yojana Scheme were completed and pointed out that it had been proposed to provide tar roads in all the places. He also said that Rs.42 crore was sanctioned by the Centre for the current year (2009-10) for implementing several development works in the district against Rs.40 crore received last year. Separate toilets for girls and boys would be built in all the schools, he said.

Mr. Napoleon discussed with the Collector, M. Vijayakumar, MLA Rajkumar, District Revenue Officer S. Palanisamy, chairman of panchayat unions and presidents of panchayats about the progress of various centre-sponsored development schemes being implemented.
