Issuance of visas to Rana to be probed

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Centre has said it will look “very carefully” into reports that the Indian Consul-General in Chicago granted visas without the Home Ministry’s clearance to terror suspect Tahawwur Rana and his woman accomplice.

The duo is alleged associates of American David Headley, who was arrested by the FBI last month for links with the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

“All these issues are going to be looked into very carefully from the point of view of security angle and perhaps in the days to come, you might see more on this,” External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna told journalists on Tuesday.

According to reports, Pakistani-Canadian Rana and the woman, Samraz Rana Akhthar, were issued multiple entry visas under the discretion of the Consul-General in violation of norms that mandate the Home Ministry’s clearance for any person born in Pakistan. Rana and Akhthar were born in Pakistan’s Punjab Province.
