MADURAI: When many nations prepare to celebrate the 20th year of the adoption of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, children in India have been denied those rights and face discrimination, said Jim Jesudoss, Executive Director, Sakthi Vidiyal.

In a statement, the organisation said that it has been 20 years since the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted and opened for signature, ratification and accession by General Assembly resolution, but in India this remains a distant reality.

Engaged in the effort to take forward this issue the organisation conducted an awareness rally across the city here on Tuesday covering major points such as Periyar Bus Stand, Railway Station, Anna Nagar, KK Nagar, Teppakulam and Tirupparankundram.

Carrying posters and stickers and small cards containing information about child rights and possible action plan to save children from being discriminated, children accompanied by volunteers spoke and distributed cards to the public.

A series of events will also take place following Universal Children’s Day.
