Proposal to carry out development work in industrial clusters by UN body

Sandeep Joshi

NEW DELHI: The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) has approached the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry for carrying out development work in at least eight industrial clusters across the country.

“We are in talks with the Ministry for working in eight industrial clusters across India. While three of them would include automobile component clusters, the programme would also cater to the needs of other industries like manufacturing and textiles,” said UNIDO Representative and Head Regional Office (South Asia) Philippe R. Scholtes here.

“The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) under the Ministry will pump in $1.5 million for the three-year project. This money will be used for counsellors and funding the operations. The three auto clusters in Chennai, Pune and Pithampur (Indore) will involve about 90 auto component manufacturers, while discussions are under way with the Ministry of Heavy Industries to extend the programme to other clusters in the North (NCR) and the East (Jamshedpur),” he said.

Mr. Scholtes also announced successful completion of a business partnership programme organised in association with the Auto Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA), which involved issues related to manufacturing, employee-workers relationship and training. “A total of $7 lakh were spent by the Heavy Industries Ministry during the second phase, which assisted 120 auto component makers. The clusters under the programme covered all the four regions – North (NCR Delhi), West (Pune), South (Bengaluru and Chennai) and the Eastern region (Jamshedpur),” he added.
