State Minority Development corporation seeks Rs. 100 cr.

The Government has allocated Rs. 49.2 crore this financial year

‘Rs. 4.29 crore is available with us for purchasing land now’


DHARWAD: Chairman of the Karnataka Minority Development Corporation N.B. Abubakar has said that the corporation had submitted a proposal to the Government seeking allocation of Rs. 100 crore in the next budget.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Mr. Abubakar said that during this financial year the Government had allocated Rs. 49.2 crore and the amount was being utilised for assisting the members of the minority communities.

He said steps were being taken to identify affected people belonging to the minority communities and implement programmes for them. A sum of Rs. 4.29 crore was available with the corporation for land purchase and it had been decided to utilise the amount for rehabilitating minorities in the flood-hit areas.

As many as 429 houses would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh per house.

Of this, 50 per cent would be given as assistance and the balance as loan at an interest rate of 6 per cent, he said.

Mr. Abubakar said that in the last nine months Rs. 36 crore had been released to 28,000 beneficiaries under various schemes.

So far, the corporation had lent Rs. 130 crore as loan and every month, Rs. 40 lakh was being collected from beneficiaries as loan instalments, he said.

After several meetings with district officials, the recovery amount had gone up to Rs. 1 crore per month, he said.

He said that assistance was being extended to minority communities based on their population in each district. While 80 per cent of the beneficiaries belonged to Muslim community, 15 per cent were Christians and five per cent belonged to other minority communities.

Later, Mr. Abubakar distributed cheques for Rs. 19 lakh to 190 Stree Shakti self-help groups as assistance under the Micro Finance scheme for 2009-10.

He also handed over the keys of autorickshaws to beneficiaries.

Zonal Officer of the corporation Abdul Bari, Administrator Shabbeer Syed Ahmed and District Manager B.S. Doddamani were present.
