Sugarcane growers threaten stir

Staff Reporter

They seek increase in procurement price

BERHAMPUR: The sugarcane growers of Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik’s home district Ganjam have threatened to take up agitation on the lines of their counterparts in Uttar Pradesh, if the procurement price of sugarcane was not hiked as per their demand.

The sugarcane growers of Ganjam district supply their produce to the Aska Cooperative Sugar Industries Limited (ACSIL). The Ganjam District Sugarcane Growers’ Association (GDSGA) is demanding the ACSIL to increase the procurement price to Rs. 2,200 per tonne. But at a meeting on November 4, chaired by the Ganjam district Collector the procurement price of sugarcane for the ACSIL was fixed at Rs. 1,600 per tonne.

The vice-president of the GDSGA, Narayan Jena said they were not ready to accept this procurement price as it would not meet their production cost. Representatives of the GDSGA had handed over a memorandum to the Chief Minister during his visit to Shergarh on Nov. 10.

Memorandum

Through this memorandum they had urged the State government to intervene and increase the procurement price of sugarcane. On Sunday the GDSGA had held a meeting to discuss about the procurement price of sugarcane fixed by the administration.

The sugarcane growers decided not to provide their produce to the sugar mill at Rs.1,600 per tonne.

Mr. Jena said “It is an irony that the procurement price of sugarcane is around Rs. 2,250 per tonne in Uttar Pradesh but the farmers there are agitating because it is not meeting their production cost. But we are being offered a procurement price which is quite less than that”.
