Ansari’s initiative to finalise Rajya Sabha agenda

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari on Thursday took the initiative to finalise the business of the House to discuss issues such as price rise, problems of sugarcane growers, climate change and Sri Lanka Tamils over the next seven sittings.

Anticipating that the Opposition was eager to get down to serious discussions on the issues, Mr. Ansari chaired the meeting of the Business Advisory Committee soon after the House adjourned after obituary references.

Sources in the Chairman’s office said 11 subjects were listed to be taken up during seven sittings of the House. They would either be in the form of Short Duration Discussion or Calling Attention.

The House will discuss issues such as internal security, price rise, corruption, agricultural and international situation through Short Duration Discussion.

Climate change, Commonwealth Games, WTO talks, disinvestment, Sri Lankan Tamils and sugarcane will come up through Calling Attention, the sources said. In this form, the government makes a statement on the issue, following which members are allowed to seek clarifications and the Minister concerned responds.
