Focussed approach to development of Kannada

The KBA has distributed around 400 titles for over 50 Kannada associations.


BANGALORE: Constructive approach to the development of Kannada gains importance as all the regional languages have been facing serious threat of survival owing to the fast-changing economic and technological scenario, Director of Kannada and Culture Manu Baligar has said.

Book distribution

He was speaking at a function organised by the Kannada Development Authority for distributing books for the Kannada associations in the Public Sector Units and other departments in the Central Government, free of cost here on Thursday.

The KBA has distributed an average of 400 titles, which are not published or sponsored by the KBA, for over 50 Kannada associations.

Mr. Baligar observed that of the regional languages, Kannada had been facing multiple challenges on various counts.

Although Bangalore had become a hub of Information Technology and Biotechnology and drawn international attention, the status of its language had been suffering.

Development of Kannada should be of immediate concern to all concerned, he said.

Programmes

Addressing the issue was the joint responsibility of the Government and the public. The Government had launched several programmes, including free book distribution and Kannada classes for non Kannada speaking persons towards this end, he said.

Explaining the objectives of the KBA, its Chairman Siddalingaiah said that the KBA had been publishing and selling quality books with an affordable price for the cause of Kannada. It had purchased Rs. 1.5 crore worth books from publishers and writers in 2007-08.

Free books

It had been distributing its publications also free of cost and at a nominal price to schools and Kannada associations, with a focus on border areas, he added.

The chairperson of the Kuvempu Bhasaha Bharati Pradhan Gurudatt spoke.
