BANGALORE: Speaking at the 259th birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan, organised by the Tipu Sultan United Front, Mumtaz Ali Khan, Minister of Minority Affairs, Wakfs and Haj said here on Wednesday, “We will release Rs. 20 crore every year for the maintenance of the Wakf property across the State.” The Tipu Sultan United Front used the occasion to demand that the State Government declare a holiday on Tipu’s birthday. Responding to their request, Mr. Khan said that the Government would consider their request and do whatever it could to pay homage to him. In response to their demand that the Wakf estates be maintained well, he said that the Government was “taking appropriate action” to keep all of Tipu’s properties safe. Siddaramaiah, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, said the Government should take into account all the requests made by the Tipu Sultan United Front, and that as the leader of the Opposition he would do all he could to support it. MemoriesOn the occasion, the seventh generation grandson of Tipu Sultan, Asif Ali Shah, arrived with much pomp and show in a procession. He said that it had been a very emotional day for him. “I came from Srirangapatna and touched many artefacts belonging to Tipu Sultan. Next year, I hope my parents will be able to accompany me,” he said. Abdul Azeem, MLC; M.V. Narasimahaiah, president, Ahinda Vedike; Mavalli Shankar, convener; Dalit Sangarsha Samiti (DSS), were also present, among others. All the members on the dais agreed that Tipu Sultan was a martyr and a soldier of the Kannada people.
