THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) will launch an air squadron in Kochi to woo students to the Air Force, T. Jayadev, officiating Deputy Director-General, NCC, has said. He was speaking at a press conference convened to mark the annual day celebrations of the NCC here on Thursday. “We are awaiting final clearance from the part of the State government for starting the air squadron,” Mr. Jayadev said. In the run-up to the celebrations, the 75,000-strong cadets in the State conducted a series of social service activities and awareness programmes such as those on anti-dowry and AIDS and provided noon meals to children and senior citizens in care homes. The celebrations will be formally kicked off by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here on Friday. Minister for Education and Culture M.A. Baby will preside over the function. The inaugural ceremony will be followed by a cultural event, led by select cadets who will represent the NCC directorates of Kerala and Lakshadweep in the Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi in 2010. On Saturday, a State-wide blood donation camp will be organised in all 14 districts. In the city, the blood donation camps will be held at University College and Mar Ivanios College, Nalanchira. A mass run for peace will be held on Sunday. The event, scheduled to begin at 6.30 a.m., will be flagged off at the Martyrs’ Square at Palayam and culminate at the NCC directorate, Vazhuthacaud. The cadets will also take an anti-dowry pledge.
