Coop. institutions wedded to rural development: Collector

Staff Reporter

ERODE: It is only cooperative institutions that are working for rural uplift, Collector R. Sudalaikannan has said.

Addressing a meeting near Sathyamangalm on Friday on the eve of 56th All India Cooperative Week celebrations, he said the governments decided to establish cooperative institutions in the country after realising that rural areas were not receiving their due under the mixed economic model.

The decision to establish cooperative institutions had led to the formation of cooperative banks and societies that had worked for rural economic uplift.

Those organisations had also worked for agriculture development, industrial development and also green revolution.

Mr. Sudalaikannan also said that cooperative institutions, unlike commercial establishments, were not driven by profit.

To the members of cooperative societies, he said that they must consider the organisation their own and avail loans with the motive of repaying.

The Collector equated the institutions with golden goose and said as long as the golden egg laying bird was healthy all would benefit, but if it was cut out of jealously none would benefit.

The Collector then gave away prizes to 27 cooperative societies that had excelled in various fields, to member Palanisamy for supplying more milk to milk cooperative society, to Natarajan and N. Appusamy for veterinary care and also to students who won prizes in competitions held to commemorate the cooperative week.

Loan

A release from the district administration says the Collector also gave away Rs. 63.51 lakh as loan to 576 members belonging to 45 groups.

Members of various cooperative organisations and MLAs participated in the function.
