Raise paddy under SRI method, says Collector

Special Correspondent

ARIYALUR: Collector T.Abraham on Friday advised the farmers in Ariyalur district to raise the samba paddy crop under the new System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method to get more yield with less cost of production and less consumption of water than the traditional system of paddy cultivation.

Presiding over the district farmers grievances meeting, the Collector said that a large number of farmers had already switched over to the SRI method of cultivation in the district and wanted the farmers to insure the crops under the National Agricultural Insurance Scheme by paying a premium of Rs.206 per acre and get compensation if the crops were affected by natural calamities like drought or flood.

The Collector said that the banks were providing loans to the farmers belonging to Adi Dravidar community and pointed out that the primary agricultural co-operative banks (PACBs) in the district had so far advanced Rs.25 crore as crop loan to the farmers. He said that he would take steps for getting the arrears due to the sugarcane growers in the district from the managements of sugar mills.

Mr Abraham pointed out that he had received 66 petitions from the farmers at the farmers’ grievances day meeting held last month of which action was taken on 33 petitions and 33 petitions were rejected. He distributed tractor, thresher and weed remover to three farmers with 50 per cent subsidy.

He told the farmers that the Agriculture department had adequate stock of paddy and other seeds and the Co-operative societies had sufficient stock of fertilisers to meet the requirement of the farmers.

District Revenue Officer R.Pichai, Joint Director of Agriculture Sivakumar, Joint Registrar of Co-operative Societies Ayyappdurai and other officials attended the meeting.
