Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin being briefed about the functioning of a jetting-cum-suction machine by Chennai Metrowater Managing Director Shiv Das Meena at a function in Chennai on Friday.

CHENNAI: Twenty-seven more jet rodding machines and desilting equipment used to remove sewer blocks would be procured with funding from the State government and under the MLA Constituency Development Fund, Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin said here on Friday.

He was speaking after commissioning three jet rodding and one jetting-cum-suction machines procured by Chennai Metrowater at a total cost of Rs.76.88 lakh. The equipment would be in operation in Area I (Kodungaiyur and Tondiarpet), Area III (Perambur and Vyasarpadi), Area VI (Chepauk and Triplicane) and Area X B (Adyar, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery).

Though Metrowater was not able to immediately mechanise its sewer cleaning work in the wake of a Madras High Court order, it is in the process of purchasing more equipment, Mr.Stalin said.

Of the estimated 84 jet rodding machines, which remove sewer blocks and flush the pipeline, 45 are already in use. Metrowater has ordered for seven more, which would be received by December end.

While five machines would be procured under Part II scheme of the government, 14 would be bought with the MLA Constituency Development Fund. Of these Anna Nagar and Thousand Lights would be allotted four machines each and Mylapore, T.Nagar, Saidapet, Perambur, Purasawalkam and Park Town would get a machine each, Mr.Stalin added.

Metrowater officials said 53 of the estimated 70 desilting machines are being operated. The remaining jet rodding and desilting machines would be procured in nine months.

Mayor M.Subramanian, Municipal Administration and Water Supply secretary Niranjan Mardi, Metrowater managing director Shiv Das Meena and Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni were present during the occasion.
