Blood donation marks Pharmacy Week

Pharmacy not hit by economic recession: MLC

About 250 students participate in the programme


GUNTUR: A ‘blood donation programme’ was organised on Friday at Chalapathi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (CIPS) by the NSS unit to mark the National Pharmacy Week on Friday. At the Annual Combined NCC Training Camp on Reddy College premises here, a blood grouping and awareness programme was organised by the voluntary blood donors’ registry www.friends2support.org.

MLC K.S. Lakshmana Rao said blood donation to the needy was one of the best help an individual could do because ‘A drop of blood saves many lives’.

In this connection he said instead of mass blood donations the students could register themselves on the website, which recently received World Summit Youth Award from UNO, at Mexico recently.

Pharmacy was one profession, which was not affected by the economic recession, he said. Intra college competitions such as elocution, essay writing and pharma quiz were conducted for the students and prizes given away on the occasion, the college pincipal N. Rama Rao said. In-charge of Medical Stores at Guntur GGH M. Premchand, Acharya Nagarjuna University College Vice-Principal C.S.N. Raju, GGH Blood Bank In-charge V. Anasuya, College society president Y.V. Anjaneyulu were present on the occasion.

Dr. Anasuya appreciated CIPS students for their active involvement in blood donation camp. She outlined blood collection procedures.

About 250 students participated in this programmeThe vice-principal said pharmacy students must strive to treat and combat dreadful diseases like swine flu, chikungunya, dengue etc. Winners of various competitions were: Pharma quiz: R.Rama Krishna & K. Babu Nageswara Rao, IV B. Pharmacy; essay writing: M.K. Prahlad, and elocution: S. Annapurna.

The NCC Group Commander ASN Rao and Camp Commandant D.S. Rao told NCC cadets that they were converting blood donation camp into voluntary blood donors’ awareness programme as they liked the principle for registering on the www.friends2support.org website.

The website volunteers gave a demonstration on how to register oneself on the website in addition to explaining the do’s and don’ts of blood donation. About 600 of the cadets from various colleges and high schools got their blood group tested and they were issued cards.
