Ban orders in 11 Tumkur villages
Staff Correspondent
TUMKUR: Prohibitory orders were clamped in 11 villages in Tumkur district on Friday following tension after members of Stree Shakti Self-Help Groups (SHGs) opposed illegal sand extraction from the Kumudwati river basin.
The ban orders will be in force in Kathiranayakanhalli, Phartihalli, Bngalammanahalli, Mydanahalli, Reddyhalli, Gundagal, Yakarlahalli, Kallidasahalli, Polenahalli, Upparahalli, and Hosahalli for three months.
Illegal sand mining is rampant along the river basin. A large number of members of SHGs staged a dharna in Tumkur demanding an immediate stop to it. The authorities were forced to oblige them. But trouble started when many people from these villages declared support for the illegal activity.
Even the lorry owners from the region favoured continuation of illegal sand extraction. Following this, sand extraction has been banned for the next three months.
