Regular scale of pay for panchayat assistants sought

Staff Reporter

KRISHNAGIRI: Tamil Nadu Rural Development Officers’ Association has urged the government to fix regular scale of pay for panchayat assistants and Makkal Nala Paniyalarkal.

Thirteen resolutions were passed at its first district-level conference in Krishnagiri on Saturday.

N. Sekar, State General Secretary, said that the association hoped that these demands would be accepted by the government and it would be announced by Deputy Chief Minister M.K.Stalin during the association’s 5th State Conference to be held in Dindigul on December 18, 19.

He also said that hundreds of posts in the Department of Rural Development were not filled for a long time. A panchayat clerk, who was working as a bridge between the panchayat and panchayat union, had to maintain at least 32 registers. Due to shortage of staff, the burden on the panchayat assistants was mounting day by day. Hence, it was necessary to upgrade their posts as Junior Assistants with immediate effect besides filling the vacant posts.

The association also demanded a separate wing at the panchayat union level for the implementation of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The other demands of the association included rectifying certain flaws in implementation of the New Health Insurance Scheme for the government servants such as confusion in payment for treatments, inclusion of parents’ names in the scheme etc, promoting Deputy Block Development Officers working in DRDA, Assistant Director of Panchayats as Block Development Officers and increasing the maternity leave days for women employees to 180 as that of Central Government.
