Ship searched, cleared

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Hectic activity was witnessed at the Chennai Port Trust on Friday following an input that a ship on its way to Singapore via Chennai was carrying some nuclear substance.

Following this, security agencies swung into action. The Coast Guard lent support to the marine police to board M V Garland, which was in the outer anchorage.

The Coast Guard sources said that they helped the marine police based on a request and boarded the ship. No such material was found on board.

According to police sources, the Chennai Port officials received information that some nuclear substance was being brought to Chennai in the Malta-registered ship that had left Visakhapatnam. The Navy, ‘Q’ Branch CID, Coastal Security Group and the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, were also involved in the security and search operation.

“After a thorough check, security agencies gave a clean chit,” Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran said.
