Encouragement: Kanimozhi, MP, giving away a prize to winner of a competition at the Cooperative Week celebrations held at Vriddhachalam recently.

VRIDDHACHALAM: A total of 24 of 26 sick cooperative societies and cooperative printing societies have been revived by the government, said Kanimozhi, MP. She was speaking at the 56th All India Cooperative Week—2009 celebrations organised here on Thursday.

By conducting elections regularly to cooperative societies, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had restored these democratic set-ups, Ms. Kanimozhi said.

By infusing necessary funds, the Chief Minister had revived the sick societies. Loans were being given to farmers and small traders through cooperative banks for a livelihood.

The Rs. 7,000-crore farm loan waiver announced by the Chief Minister had set a precedent even for the Centre to follow. Ms. Kanimozhi further said the financial assistance scheme to pregnant women had received wide appreciation. By providing farm loans, subsidy for buying farm implements and agricultural inputs, the government had increased food output.

The recently introduced Kalaignar health insurance scheme for life-saving treatments was a boon to people, Ms. Kanimozhi said.

She gave away prizes to winners of various competitions conducted in connection with the celebrations.

Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam spoke.

Collector P. Seetharaman, Regional Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies S.R. Venkatesan, Joint Registrar/Special Officer of Cooperative Societies, N.Mrinalini, and MLA G. Aiyappan, were present.
