HUBLI: “Choose a career, not just a job.” This was what Mike D’Silva, Senior Divisional Manager of Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company Ltd., Hubli, stressed while addressing budding managers here on Saturday.

He was delivering a guest lecture on “Job opportunities in marketing”, organised by the BL (The Hindu BusinessLine) Club at KLE Society’s Institute of Management Studies and Research (IMSR) here on Saturday.

The guest lecture marked the beginning of the BL Club activities for the academic year in Hubli-Dharwad.

The BL Club is a joint initiative of The Hindu group of publications and SyndicateBank through which students are provided an opportunity to interact with experts from the corporate world.

Speaking about various developments in the field of marketing over the years, Mr. D’Silva threw light on the wide range of opportunities in the field. He said that retail market would be the biggest industry in the future, offering lakhs of opportunities. “There is a huge career growth in the retail sector,” he said.

Underscoring the need for choosing a proper career, Mr. D’Silva advised the students not to accept any job offer immediately. “See whether the job helps you in making a career. But, before appearing for an interview you should make up your mind on the career you want for yourself. Don’t just look for a job, choose your career carefully.”

“Don’t’ think of today, think of tomorrow. Think about how the job helps you in your career growth. Don’t join a company that can’t show your career path,” Mr. D’Silva said. He also advised the management students to take their internship programme seriously as it was their first step towards the industry.

In the interaction that followed, students including Vasudev Purohit, Wahid, Indira, Sheetal Kumar, Sandeep, Bhargav and Arpita got their doubts cleared.

Intervening during the interaction, Chief Manager of SyndicateBank K.S. Venugopal said that there were several opportunities in the banking sector too.

Assistant General Manager of the bank Shrikanth B. Kulagod briefed about the bank’s contribution and said that it was a pioneer in taking several initiatives including agricultural lending.

He also briefed about various schemes of the bank, including “Syndvidya” under which education loans are offered.

He later proposed a vote of thanks. Director of IMSR Prasad Roodagi was present. Assistant Regional Manager of The Hindu H.C. Laksmikanth welcomed the gathering.
