Winners to tour Singapore, says District Library Officer

Knowledge store: Uppiliapuram MLA R. Rani handing over the prize to a student at the National Library Week celebrations at Thuraiyur in Tiruchi district.

THURAIYUR: To encourage reading habit and enrol more school students as members of public libraries, the Department of Libraries will conduct various competitions to the school students during January.

The winners will be taken on a tour of Singapore, the District Library Officer, A. P. Sivakumar said.

Speaking at the 42nd National Library Week celebrations organised by the Readers Circle of the Thuraiyur Branch Library and the Rotary Club of Thuraiyur at the Zameendar Higher Secondary School here recently, Mr. Sivakumar said that essay writing, oratorical and slogan writing competitions would be held for the students of classes from IX to XII at taluk level, district level and state level.

While the State level winners will be taken to Singapore, the second place winners will be taken on an all India tour and the third place winners will be taken on a State tour.

Only those students who are members of the public libraries are eligible to take part in the competitions.

The students enrolling themselves as members before November 30 need not pay the subscription for the first year (Rs. 10 for urban students and Rs. 5 for rural students). They need to pay only the caution deposit (urban areas Rs. 20 and rural areas Rs. 15).

Mr. Sivakumar called upon the students to take advantage of this and enrol themselves as members of the public libraries.

The Department has planned to organise similar competitions during the year 2011 also in a fitting manner and the winners will be taken on a tour of European countries.

The runners up would be taken to Singapore and the third place winner would be taken on an all India tour, Mr. Sivakumar added.

The library movement should become a mass movement, he said and added that the department through the ‘Our World Library’ project has intensified the enrolment campaign.

R. Rani, MLA, who was the chief guest, said that steps have been taken for the construction of a new building to house the Thuraiyur branch library.

Readers’ Circle president T. Natarajan presided over the function. Assistant Elementary Education Officer A. Pugazhendi, Thuraiyur Municipal Chairperson Boopathi Chelladurai, vice-governor of Rotary International R. Madhavan, the president of the Rotary Club of Thuraiyur, G. Murali, the secretary of Readers’ Circle, K. Arulanandam offered felicitations.

A large number of students participated in the painting, essay writing, slogan writing competitions and Mrs. Rani gave away prizes to the winners.
