IMPRESSIVE HAUL: Coimbatore City Police Commissioner P. Sivanandi on Saturday pointing out the vehicle, weapons and cash seized from a three-member gang involved in a number of waylaying and robbery cases. Coimbatore: Special teams of the Coimbatore City Police on Friday arrested three persons for waylaying and snatching bags containing cash from persons after spraying chilli powder on them. They are involved in two cases of murder as well. City Police Commissioner P. Sivanandi told reporters that following incidents of waylaying and robbery, special teams were constituted under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N. Kamini and the teams functioned under Assistant Commissioners of Police R. Gunasekaran and Murugasamy. The teams arrested three persons K. Saravanan alias Saravana Bhavan alias Saravana Kanth (32) of Pattanampudur, T. Sekar (30) of NGR Puram, Irugur and M. Sahayaraj alias Raj (35) of Puliakulam. Saravanan, the team leader, used to engage his associates in turn to commit the crimes. The gangsters used to change their appearance with moustaches that were recovered from them. On interrogation, the gang confessed to their involvement in five cases of waylaying and robbery. The gang was said to have robbed two persons of Rs. 4.64 lakh on Sir Shanmugham Road on May 4, 2007, after spraying chilli powder and inflicting injuries with a knife on them. On January 18, 2008, near the new flyover in Tatabad area, the gang stabbed two Indian Bank staff who had come in an autorickshaw to deposit Rs. 13 lakh. They were robbed of the cash. On March 4, 2009, on TV Samy Road in R.S. Puram, Saravanan and Sahayaraj threw chilly powder on two motorcycle riders and threatened them with a sickle and attempted to snatch a suitcase containing 150 grams of gold. With the money it got through robbery, the gang bought a luxury maxicab vehicle and a two-wheeler. The trio had allegedly murdered Saravanan’s elder brother because he threatened to expose their criminal activities. Saravanan and his accomplices rammed a car against Senthilnathan who was on a two-wheeler on May 23, 2008 and caused him grievous injuries. He died on May 26. It was treated as an accident. Now, based on their confessions, the police have registered it as a murder case.
