A girl pays tribute at the portrait of Sahid Laxman Nayak at the Berhampur Circle Jail on Sunday. BERHAMPUR: One hundred and eighth birth anniversary of Sahid Laxman Nayak was celebrated in the Berhampur circle jail on Sunday. On March 19, 1943 this great martyr, who had led tribal movement against the Britishers in undivided Koraput district, was hanged to death in the Berhampur circle jail. The state information and public relation department along with the Berhampur city municipal corporation organised the celebration in the jail where the martyr breathed his last. The Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of Ganjam, Madan Mohan Deo, city mayor, Siba Shankar Dash, senior superintendent of the circle jail Bankim Charan Mohanty and citizens of all walks of life paid their tribute to the great leader. Floral tributes were paid at the ‘condemned cell’ in the jail where Laxman Nayak was kept before his death sentence. He had been kept in this cell from November 1942 till his day of martyrdom. Now this cell has been converted into a memorial. The statue of the martyr outside the circle jail was also garlanded. During the meeting organised in his memory, the speakers elaborated his efforts and dreams for a free India. The commissioner of city municipal corporation, Bhim Manseth, declared that the municipal corporation would publish a souvenir on the life and times of Sahid Laxman Nayak to keep alive his legend for the future generation. The students who had won in different competitions organised in memory of the freedom fighter were awarded during the meeting. A function was also held at the Sahid Laxman Nayak Memorial High School in the city to mark the day.
