Funds crunch deters State from starting IVF centres

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has said that the huge investment required is the major factor that comes in the way of setting up In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) centres at government medical colleges in the State. However, the government will move in stages towards achieving this aim.

She was responding to a suggestion made in this regard by Kozhikode Member of Parliament M.K. Raghavan and Malabar Institute of Medical Sciences chairman Dr. Azad Moopen while speaking at the inauguration of the MIMS KRAFT Institute of Reproductive Medicine and Research here on Sunday. While admitting that the government’s attention was focussed on catching up with private superspecialty hospitals in areas like cardio-thoracic surgery, neuro-surgery and renal treatment, she promised to address the problem quickly.

In his presidential address, Dr. Moopen said the arrival of in-vitro fertilisation treatment technique had helped solve several social issues like the blaming of women for infertility. He said now in almost 40 per cent infertility cases, pregnancy could be achieved through IVF techniques. Dr. Moopen said the major issue in IVF treatment was the lack of ethical and legal strictures, resulting in nefarious practices.
