Move to boost rice cultivation

Staff Reporter

Kakinada: The district administration has decided to seek the Government’s permission for encouraging the cultivation of rice in tribal areas under National Food Safety Mission (NFSM) and to increase the quantum of various subsidies being given to tribal farmers involved in agriculture and allied activities.

The proposal to make NFSM applicable to rice cultivation by the tribal community has been necessitated by the dwindling acreage of paddy fields in Agency areas, Collector Gopalakrishna Dwivedi told a meeting of officials of ITDA and other departments concerned on Sunday.

Hike in subsidy

Subsidy component for the tribal folks involved in agriculture and animal husbandry is sought to be increased to 70 per cent and 90 per cent of the premium payable by them under the crop insurance scheme to be borne by the government.

These measures would help alleviate their living standards and in turn facilitate the much-wanted increase in rice production and yield-per-acre.

Health care

Mr. Dwivedi said he was also asking the State government to sanction additional funds for filling the vacant posts of doctors in Agency areas .
