Tension in Machche village

Staff Correspondent

Belgaum: Tension prevailed in Machche village on the Belgaum-Goa highway when some people attacked a place of worship there around 8.30 p.m. on Sunday.

They also damaged three four-wheelers and set fire to a two-wheeler.

Suspected militants

Police said the miscreants were suspected to be members of a militant outfit.

They said there was a squabble between people belonging to two communities over transportation of animals, reportedly to a slaughterhouse.

Soon, a group attacked the place of worship, pelted stones and damaged some parts of the structure.

Slogans raised

Unconfirmed reports said a group shouted slogans in the name of the outfit while returning after the attack.

Superintendent of Police Soniya Narang rushed to the spot with additional forces and inspected the damaged structure

The police immediately resorted to checking of vehicles passing through and those entering the village.

Under control

They said the situation was under control. Additional police personnel were camping in the village.
