SET TO CHANGE: Construction work in progress on platform No.3 (left), at Chennai Central station. CHENNAI: Work to extend the length of four platforms at Chennai Central Railway station to accommodate trains with more rakes has begun. Chennai Divisional Railway Manager S.K. Kulshrestha said on completion of the work on platforms, No.2A, 3, 4 and 5, trains with 24 coaches could be accommodated. At present, 24 coaches can be accommodated only at six of the 12 platforms at the station. Platform No.1 and 2 can accommodate trains with 22 coaches. According to the official, platform No.2A, which is the shortest, can accommodate only 16 coaches now. The remaining three platforms that are being extended now accommodate only 22 coaches. A senior railway official at the station said construction work on extending the platforms was being carried only at night to avoid inconvenience to commuters. He said a schedule for the construction activity has been worked out and work on extending the platforms would be completed on December 13. On an average, 19 trains are operated daily from the station of which 12 have 24 coaches. Extension of the platforms was in tune with the growing traffic at Chennai Central station. Southern Railway was also keen on introducing more trains with 24 coaches.
