JUST ARRIVED: Fertilizer bags being unloaded from a goods wagon in Madurai. MADURAI: Fifty rail wagons of Indian Farmers’ Fertilizer Cooperative (IFFCO) Limited’s complex fertilizer, meant for distribution in five southern districts, arrived here on Monday. Farmers had complained of non-availability of this fertilizer at the monthly farmers’ grievance redressal meeting here on Friday. Assistant Director of Agriculture (Quality Control) S. Radhakrishnan said that 2,600 tonnes of complex was moved from Paradip port in Orissa. While 1,250 tonnes would be allotted for Madurai district, Sivaganga would get 530 tonnes. Theni 380 tonnes, Virudhunagar 250 tonnes and Dindigul 190 tonnes. Following complaints of complex fertilizer getting out of stock in primary agricultural cooperative societies, 1,050 tonnes would be distributed among the 76 cooperative societies in Madurai district, Mr. Radhakrishnan said. The remaining 200 tonnes would be kept with Tamil Nadu Cooperative Marketing Federation as a buffer stock. Stating that farmers were of the opinion that only complex fertilizer was suitable for their land which was leading to “artificial demand,” he said they could also make use of Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) for basal dressing. “DAP is adequately stocked in cooperative societies,” he said.
