Punjab, Haryana expect sharp fall in sugar output

CHANDIGARH: The cane-crushing season in Punjab and Haryana is set to start this Wednesday, and both States are expecting a sharp 38 per cent fall in sugar output to 53.2 lakh quintal on account of a sharp fall in the area under cultivation.

Despite both States offering a higher State Advised Price (SAP) to the cane growers compared to other States, the sugar output is set to plummet up to 38 per cent for the current season that could bring down the crushing period from 150 days to 90 days, point out experts.

Cultivation

Punjab is expecting an output of 23.2 lakh quintal which will be lowest in the past four years, while Haryana is anticipating 30 lakh quintals, according to State officials.

The preference of farmers to grow wheat and paddy crops over sugarcane has caused a 45 to 55 per cent reduction in the area under cane cultivation in both States during the past two years.- PTI
