CHENNAI: The need to inculcate a sense of patriotism, discipline, and involvement in nation-building activities was stressed at the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Raising Day celebrations here on Sunday.

Speaking at the event, the Minister for Environment, Youth Welfare and Sports T.P.M. Mohideen Khan said diligence and discipline were the key characteristics of an NCC cadet.

The community projects and social work of NCC have enhanced the living conditions of destitute and victims of natural disasters.

“Their phenomenal work during tsunami showcased their team effort and dynamism. We have been encouraging students to also take up voluntary service and not merely restrict themselves to academics. Students must enrol themselves in NCC to evolve as a leader with strong character and shape their personality,” he said.

Hike in allowances

The State government has allocated Rs.26 crore for NCC and has been hiking the allowances periodically. This year, the food allowance for officer cadets attending training courses and funds for other facilities have been increased.

The funds for training camps for Republic Day parade has been raised from Rs. 25 lakh to Rs. 30 lakh, he said.

“The government strongly believes that the contribution of NCC cadets is crucial in inspiring more students to join and serve the nation. NCC is a training platform for army and the students learn to get adapted to highly-disciplined living environment,” he said.

NCC Deputy Director General Commodore Sartaj Imam, presiding over the event, said a series of camps are conducted to train and test the diligence and confidence of the cadets.

The NCC cadets from Madras A, Madras B and Puducherry presented a variety cultural entertainment programme.
