Children’s film fete begins at Villupuram

Special Correspondent

VILLUPURAM: A 10-day children’s film festival began here with the screening of “Sundara Kandam of the Mahabharata” at the Kalyan Theatre here on Monday. Collector R. Palanisamy lighted the lamp to mark the inauguration of the fete.

Speaking on the occasion, he said that the festival was organised by the Children’s Film Society of India, the district administration and the Villupuram District Film Exhibitors’ Association.

During the festival (excepting on Saturday and Sunday), five movies - “Sundara Kandam,” “Chellam,” “Hayat,” “Adhisaya Coat” and “Malli” - would be screened in 20 cinema houses across the district.

The timing would be from 9 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., which would neither affect studies nor the regular schedule of film exhibitors.

Mr. Palanisamy underscored the point that mere bookish knowledge would not be sufficient and students should gain knowledge from happenings in society and quality movies.

Good films would have a positive impact on students and help in imparting moral and societal values. By imbibing positive attitude and good character, students could grow into creative and useful citizens.

Mr. Palanisamy further said movies also develop critical acumen among students and serve as an entertainment avenue. He said that after watching the movies, students could write criticism about them and forward these to the Children’s Film Society of India, 162, Santhome Road, Chennai 600004.

The three best critiques would be awarded gold, silver and bronze medals, he added. Municipal chairman R. Janakaraj, District Education Officer T. Manu Gandhi, secretary of the Film Exhibitors’ Association Pon. Ramakrishnan, Kalyan Theatre owner R.Vijay, Public Relations Officer M. Palanisamy and N.J. Radhakrishnan of the Film Society were present.

All the cinema houses have been directed to provide proper amenities to the students. The PRO section has been entrusted with the task of rotating film rolls among the cinema houses.

The schools have been given the schedule to send their students to the designated theatres. Organisers expect that over 50,000 students in the district would watch the movies.
