Kollam council settles for land exchange

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Kollam Corporation Council on Tuesday passed a resolution which states that 44.51 ares of land owned by the Corporation at Karbala Junction in the city will be handed over to the Railways only if the latter hand over 18.50 cents of land in its possession to the civic body.

The Railways have already occupied the land at Karbala and have started construction of stabling facilities for mainline electrical multiple units. But as per records, the land was given to the erstwhile Kollam Municipality in 1963 by the State government.

The present Kollam Corporation has not formally handed over the land to the Railways. The resolution states that the land will be handed over to the Railways only in lieu of the Railway land at Chinnakada. The latter land is needed by the Corporation to construct the proposed Chinnakada subway as a measure for easing traffic congestion there.
