Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Veteran Thayambaka artiste Paduvilayi Achutha Marar and Kurunkuzhal artiste Kombathu Kuttappanicker will share this year’s Pallavur Appu Marar Award instituted by the State government to honour individuals who have been keeping the traditional temple art forms of Kerala vibrant even in this modern era. Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby announced the award at a press conference here on Tuesday.

Paduvilayi Achutha Marar, 85, hailing from Kannur district, has been active in temple art forms such as Thayambaka, Chendamelam and Pani for the last six decades. Three generations of artistes, especially in Malabar region, had their training in the nuances of these percussion instruments from him.

Kombathu Kuttappanicker, 80, is a well-known exponent of Kurunkuzhal recital and had been a major presence at temple festivals in the State for the last several decades. A Kurunkuzhal artiste was getting this award for the first time, Mr. Baby said.

They will share the award money of Rs.1 lakh equally between them.

The award winners were selected by a committee chaired by M.K. Raghavan Nambiar.
