Kolkata: Violence flared up in the Panihati area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district when supporters of the Trinamool Congress clashed with those of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) following a confrontation between members of the student wings of the two parties on Tuesday. The police had to burst teargas shells after a baton charge failed to disperse the two groups. Bricks were hurled at the police injuring a few. Personnel of the State’s Rapid Action Force were deployed. ConfrontationThe confrontation between the two student groups occurred over the filing of nomination papers for elections to a local college, Panihati Mahavidyala. It took a turn for the worse when supporters of the two parties turned violent and attacked each other. Several persons belonging to the two groups were injured, according to the local police. Some were admitted to a local hospital. Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee alleged that the police were inactive when members of her party’s student wing were being attacked by those of the CPI(M). Those belonging to the Trinamool were being prevented from filing nominations for college elections, she added.
