NEW DELHI: Traffic in the heart of the Capital was thrown out of gear for several hours on Tuesday evening because of a procession to mark the “Shahidi Divas” of Shri Guru Teg Bahadur. The procession started from Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib and terminated at Gurdwara Rakab Ganj Sahib. Vehicles moved at a snail’s pace throughout the evening with many people complaining about long waits and diversions. The roads affected included Subhas Marg, H. C. Sen Marg, Town Hall, Nai Sarak, Ajmeri Gate, Pahar Ganj, Basant Road, Punchkuian Road, Gole Market and Bhai Vir Singh Marg. “There were no traffic jams though traffic moved slowly at several places and some arterial roads were affected. We had issued an advisory to make sure that motorists did not face any problems and had suggested that they avoid taking the route of the procession,” said a Traffic Control Room official. “I was stuck around Ashok Road for well over 30 minutes in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Diversions added to the chaos,” said a government servant returning home from work in his car in the evening. “It would have been better if I had taken the metro rail today. I would have been spared all this trouble.” “Roads leading from the main procession area were the worst affected. We were stranded at South Avenue for nearly an hour and almost everyone on that road complained about diversions,” said another motorist caught in the evening peak hour rush.
