TIRUCHI: A section of residents of Railway Colony in Golden Rock and members of the Southern Railway Mazdoor Union (SRMU) staged a road blockade at Golden Rock on Tuesday evening protesting against the diversion of traffic through their colony in view of the ongoing four-lane work on the Tiruchi-Chennai Bypass Road.

The immediate provocation was a major traffic snarl caused on the Railway Colony Road after three trucks on Tuesday evening suffered breakdowns in the potholes and slushy conditions along the road through which traffic has been diverted. Four other trucks were stuck earlier in the day, residents complained.

The residents contended that the road had been badly damaged after the traffic diversion and no step had been taken to repair the same. No permission has been taken from the Railway authorities for diverting traffic through the roads maintained by the Railways. They demanded that trucks be refused entry on the road, lest it led to major accidents.

Senior police officials rushed to the spot and persuaded the agitators to withdraw the stir which lasted for about 45 minutes.

Later, the agitators held talks with the police officials and insisted that the diversion should be withdrawn within 10 days.

The road inside the colony should be repaired immediately.
