IDRB team visits Mullaperiyar on Kerala’s directive KATTAPPANA: An expert team of the Irrigation Design and Research Board (IDRB), which inspected the Mullaperiyar dam on Tuesday found six additional leakages at the dam after the water level rose in the reservoir. The visit followed a directive of the Kerala government to the IDRB to inspect the leakages and submit a report. The team led by C.N. Sathi, Chief Engineer, IDRB, consisted of A.Geethakumari, Joint Director, Hydrology; M.Rajasekhar, Joint Director, Inter State Waters; and R. Priyesh, Assistant Director, ISW. It was helped by C.K. Radhamani, Superintending Engineer, and George Daniel, Executive Engineer. The team reached the dam about 9 a.m. and returned by afternoon. Mr. Daniel said the water level in the dam was 135.7 ft. He said the team found six to seven leakages and would submit a report to the government. No rainfall was recorded in the catchment area of the dam and the inflow of water was 1,511 cubic feet a second and the discharge to Tamil Nadu was 1,370 cubic feet. The water storage was 6,042 million cubic feet on Tuesday. The government in August 2007 had deputed the IDRB to prepare a project report for a new dam at Mullaperiyar.
