NEW DELHI: Power distribution company BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) on Wednesday announced that it has firmed up arrangements to procure power for the Capital to meet its winter demand. The company claims that it has learnt from its experience and booked more power than the expected requirement. “The company has made more than adequate arrangements to source power to meet the peak demand of nearly 15 lakh consumers during the ensuing winter months. While making these arrangements, taking a cue from experience and factoring in the last minute unforeseen constraints, the company is ensuring a buffer of 3-5 per cent over and above the anticipated demand,” said a company official. The tie-ups are with the several States including Punjab, Karnataka and Meghalaya. Referring to these tie-ups, BRPL Chief Executive Officer Gopal Saxena said the buffer will ensure that the company is not caught unawares if the demand gets higher than expected. “The power demand this winter in Delhi and BRPL licensed area is expected to go up to 3,300 MW and 1,450 MW respectively. BRPL has made arrangements to cater to this demand by contracting bilateral purchases even at higher rates as may be necessary to ensure uninterrupted supply,” the official said. For the month of December, the company claims to have made arrangements for an additional 357 MW, of which 175 MW will come from Chhattisgarh, 80 MW from Andhra Pradesh, 45 MW from Maharashtra, 30 MW from Karnataka, 15 MW from Punjab and 12 MW from Meghalaya. For the month of January, the company has made arrangements for an additional 390 MW, which includes 100 MW from Chhattisgarh from January 1 to 15, 50 MW from January 16 to 31, 80 MW from Andhra Pradesh and 45 MW from Maharashtra, 15 MW from Punjab and 150 MW from Chhattisgarh. “BRPL has also drawn a plan to bank surplus power during the lean periods of the winter months. This power will be made available for BRPL customers during the peak summer months,” said the official. Under the arrangement relatively cheaper power is procured on a round-the-clock basis and a part of it is banked with an en-route State to reduce transmission losses as well as the open access charges. The company plans to bank 105.5 MW with Himachal from November to March, and another 400 MW with Uttaranchal and 150 MW with MP over the same periods.
